Neoguri Ramen: Mild and Spicy Seafood, Cup and Bowl Compared

This page covers five Neoguri versions from Nongshim. Four are soup-style: Nongshim Mild Neoguri, Nongshim Mild Neoguri Cup, Nongshim Neoguri Cup and Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle. The fifth, Nongshim Stir-fried Neoguri, is a stir-fried noodle. The two mild versions carry a light taste tag, and the cup and bowl versions lean salty and hearty.

Per 100 g, sodium runs from 934 mg in the stir-fried version to 1921 mg in the Mild Neoguri Cup. Calories run from 421 kcal in Mild Neoguri to 464 kcal in the Big Bowl. The sections below show how the five compare and what to check before you cook.

How the flavors group

The mild pair is Nongshim Mild Neoguri and Nongshim Mild Neoguri Cup. Both are tagged as light. The cup version also carries a salty tag. The standard pair is Nongshim Neoguri Cup and Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle, both tagged salty and hearty. Their ingredient lists name fish cake and processed seafood products.

Nongshim Stir-fried Neoguri stands apart. It is tagged salty and nutty, and it is the only one listed with a flavored oil. It is made to be eaten without a soup.

Lighter and heavier per 100 g

On sodium, the stir-fried version is lowest at 934 mg per 100 g. Mild Neoguri follows at 1233 mg, then the Big Bowl at 1396 mg and the Neoguri Cup at 1516 mg. The Mild Neoguri Cup is highest at 1921 mg. So a mild name does not guarantee the lowest sodium on the label. The cup version of the mild flavor is the saltiest of the five by these numbers.

On calories and fat, Mild Neoguri is lightest at 421 kcal and 12.5 g of fat per 100 g. The Big Bowl is heaviest at 464 kcal and 18.92 g of fat. Sugar per 100 g is lowest in the Big Bowl at 3.6 g and highest in Stir-fried Neoguri at 6.57 g. Mild Neoguri has 5 g, the Mild Neoguri Cup 6.35 g and the Neoguri Cup 6.45 g.

What to check on the label

Wheat is listed for Mild Neoguri and Stir-fried Neoguri. Wheat and fish are both listed for the Big Bowl. If you avoid an ingredient, read the pack in your hands, because an empty flag is not a certification.

These are the Korean-market versions. Packs sold outside Korea can differ, so compare the ingredient list and numbers on your own pack before relying on the figures here.

The lineup

  • Nongshim Mild Neoguri 순한 너구리 — The lightest of the five per 100 g in calories and fat, with a light taste tag. Its ingredient list names a processed seafood product, and wheat is listed.
  • Nongshim Mild Neoguri Cup 순한너구리컵 — The mild flavor in a cup, and the highest sodium of the five at 1921 mg per 100 g. It carries a salty tag alongside the light one.
  • Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle 너구리큰사발면 — The larger bowl, with the most calories and fat per 100 g and the lowest sugar. Its ingredients name fish cake and dried green onion, and wheat and fish are listed.
  • Nongshim Neoguri Cup 너구리컵 — The standard cup, tagged salty and hearty. Its ingredient list names fish cake, processed seafood products and a powder soup.
  • Nongshim Stir-fried Neoguri 볶음너구리 — The stir-fried version, with the lowest sodium at 934 mg per 100 g and the highest sugar at 6.57 g. It lists a flavored oil and is tagged nutty.

Nutrition and label flags, per 100 g

Every figure in the table comes from the product's own nutrition label as filed with Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), per 100 g so packs of different sizes compare directly. An ingredient flag means that ingredient is written on the label. An empty flag means nothing of that kind is listed. It is not a certification and does not rule out shared production lines. These are the Korean-market versions; packs sold outside Korea can differ.

Popular Korean Ramen Ranked by Calories (Per 100 g)

This page ranks 22 well-known Korean ramen by kcal per 100 g, from the most to the least. Paldo Lunch Box sits at the top with 453 kcal per 100 g. Samyang Buldak Bokkeummyeon is at the bottom with 379 kcal per 100 g.

All figures are per 100 g for the Korean-market versions. Packs sold outside Korea can differ, so use these numbers to compare products, not as a promise about the pack in your hand.

The top of the list

Paldo Lunch Box leads at 453 kcal per 100 g. Ottogi Sesame Ramyun and Paldo King Ttukkeong follow at 450 kcal per 100 g each. Nongshim Sari Gomtang Noodle comes next at 445 kcal, then Ottogi Snack Noodle at 440 kcal. All five are soup-style ramen, and all five carry the hearty taste tag.

Sodium per 100 g varies even among these five. Lunch Box shows 1605 mg and King Ttukkeong shows 1536 mg. Sari Gomtang Noodle shows 1545 mg and Snack Noodle shows 1583 mg. The highest sodium on the whole page belongs to Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle, at 1849 mg per 100 g. Its kcal sits mid-table at 436.

The lighter end

The four lowest are Samyang Buldak Bokkeummyeon at 379 kcal, Ottogi Jin Jjamppong at 385 kcal, Nongshim Chapagetti Double Black at 401 kcal and Paldo Bibim Myun at 404 kcal, all per 100 g. Three of the four are stir-fried or mixed-style noodles rather than soup. Next up is a group of three at 417 kcal per 100 g: Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor, Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor and Nongshim Shin Ramyun.

Lower kcal does not always mean lower sodium or sugar. Bibim Myun has the lowest sodium after Sichuan Chapagetti, at 838 mg per 100 g, but the highest sugar on the page, at 9.23 g per 100 g. Jin Jjamppong is light in kcal but shows 1369 mg of sodium per 100 g.

How to read the label

Every number here is per 100 g, not per pack. Check the weight of your own pack before comparing it with another. Seasoning packets, sauce packets and cup or bowl formats all change what you actually eat.

Several products here list wheat in the allergen line, so read the allergen line on your own pack. The list above is based on the Korean-market versions, and packs sold outside Korea can differ.

Samyang Ramen vs Shin Ramyun: Label Comparison

Samyang Samyang Ramyun is the heavier and slightly saltier of the two per 100 g. It has 429 kcal and 1517 mg of sodium, against 417 kcal and 1492 mg for Nongshim Shin Ramyun. Sugar, protein and fat are identical at 3.33 g, 8.33 g and 13.33 g per 100 g. Carbs are 69.16 g for Samyang and 65.83 g for Shin Ramyun.

The listed ingredients and flavors differ more than the numbers do. Shin Ramyun is described as spicy and beef-flavored, and its list adds a fruit and vegetable product to the noodles and seasoning blend. Samyang Samyang Ramyun lists only noodles and a seasoning blend, and carries a hearty taste tag with no spicy tag.

Nongshim Shin Ramyun
Nongshim Shin Ramyun
Samyang Samyang Ramyun
Samyang Samyang Ramyun

The main differences

On energy, Samyang Samyang Ramyun comes to 429 kcal per 100 g and Nongshim Shin Ramyun to 417 kcal. The sodium gap is small: 1517 mg against 1492 mg per 100 g. Both are high-sodium noodles by any reading, so neither is the light choice. The extra weight for Samyang shows up mainly in carbs, 69.16 g against 65.83 g per 100 g.

The ingredient lists set them apart. Shin Ramyun lists noodles, a seasoning blend and a processed fruit and vegetable product. Samyang lists noodles and a seasoning blend only. For taste, Shin Ramyun is tagged spicy and hearty. Samyang is tagged hearty and also carries a retro theme tag.

Who might prefer which

If you want a spicy, beef-flavored soup, Shin Ramyun is the one whose flavor description and taste tags point that way. It also has slightly lower energy, sodium and carbs per 100 g.

If you like a plainer, hearty bowl with a shorter ingredient list, Samyang Samyang Ramyun fits better. Its tags give hearty and retro, with no spicy tag. Expect a bit more energy and carbs per 100 g.

What to check on the label

Read the ingredient list first. The two products differ there, and the seasoning blend is listed without further detail. If you avoid a particular ingredient, check the pack in your hands.

Both sets of numbers here are for the Korean-market versions. Packs sold outside Korea can differ, so compare the label on your own pack before you rely on any figure.

The lineup

  • Nongshim Shin Ramyun 신라면 — The spicy, beef-flavored one, with a fruit and vegetable product added to its ingredient list. It is a little lower than Samyang in energy, sodium and carbs per 100 g.
  • Samyang Samyang Ramyun 삼양라면 — The shorter ingredient list, with noodles and a seasoning blend only, and a hearty tag with a retro theme. It is the heavier and slightly saltier of the two per 100 g.

Nutrition and label flags, per 100 g

Popular Korean Cup Noodles Ranked by Sodium (Per 100 g)

Among these 15 cup and bowl ramen, Nongshim Shin Ramyun Cup has the most sodium at 1985 mg per 100 g. Samyang Big Cup Buldak Bokkeummyeon has the least at 905 mg per 100 g. Every figure on this page is per 100 g, so the list compares the noodles themselves and not whole packs.

Four versions sit close behind the top: Nongshim Squid Jjamppong Cup, Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle and the two Ottogi Jin Ramen cups. The big cups and big bowls sit lower, and the two black bean sauce noodles and the Samyang stir-fried ramen sit lowest.

Nongshim Shin Ramyun Cup
Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle
Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle
Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor Cup
Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor Cup
Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Cup
Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Cup

The top of the list

Nongshim Shin Ramyun Cup is first at 1985 mg of sodium per 100 g. It is a spicy beef-flavored ramen, and its taste tags are salty and hearty. Next come Nongshim Squid Jjamppong Cup at 1851 mg and Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle at 1849 mg. These two are very close to each other.

Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor Cup follows at 1800 mg per 100 g. Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Cup is next at 1754 mg. The mild cup has more sodium per 100 g than the spicy one, so the name on the front says little about salt. Paldo Lunch Box, Paldo King Ttukkeong, Nongshim Neoguri Cup and Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Bowl fill the middle of the list. The last two are almost level at 1516 mg and 1515 mg.

The lighter end

The big cups and big bowls of the same ramen come out lower than the standard cups. Nongshim Shin Ramyun Big Bowl Noodle has 1360 mg per 100 g, against 1985 mg for the Shin Ramyun Cup. Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle has 1396 mg, against 1516 mg for the Neoguri Cup. Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Big Cup has 1355 mg, against 1754 mg for the standard spicy cup.

The lowest three are Nongshim Chapagetti Big Bowl Noodle at 992 mg, Paldo Jjajang King Ttukkeong at 962 mg and Samyang Big Cup Buldak Bokkeummyeon at 905 mg. All three are sauce-style noodles. The Paldo Jjajang King Ttukkeong has the most fat on the list at 20 g per 100 g, so lower sodium does not mean lighter in every way.

How to read the label

Check the sodium line first, then the pack size. The figures here are per 100 g, so they show how salty the food is. They do not show how much sodium is in the whole cup. Kcal, sugar, protein, fat and carbs are on the same basis.

These figures describe the Korean-market versions. Packs sold outside Korea can differ, so compare against the label on the pack in your hands. If you watch for allergens, read the listed allergens too. Wheat appears on many of these, Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle also lists fish, and Nongshim Chapagetti Big Bowl Noodle also lists soy.

The lineup

  • Nongshim Shin Ramyun Cup 신라면컵 — The highest sodium on the list per 100 g. It is described as a spicy beef-flavored ramen, and its listed ingredients start with fish cake, processed fruit and vegetable, dried shiitake and dried green onion.
  • Nongshim Squid Jjamppong Cup 오징어짬뽕컵 — The squid jjamppong flavor, with sodium very close to the Yukgaejang bowl. Its ingredient list starts with wheat flour and includes a processed seafood item.
  • Nongshim Yukgaejang Bowl Noodle 육개장사발면 — A bowl-style noodle with a single taste tag, hearty, and the lowest sugar among the top three. Its listed ingredients include fish cake and dried green onion, and wheat is the listed allergen.
  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor Cup 진라면 순한맛 컵 — The mild version of Jin Ramen has more sodium per 100 g than the spicy cup from the same brand. Its short ingredient list names processed seafood and processed fruit and vegetable items, with no allergens listed.
  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Cup 진라면 매운맛 컵 — The spicy Jin Ramen cup, tagged spicy and salty. Its ingredient list ends with chili powder, and its sodium is a little lower than the mild cup.
  • Paldo Lunch Box 도시락 — Paldo's cup is tagged hearty and salty, and it has the lowest sugar on the list at 2.33 g per 100 g. The ingredient list is very short: noodles, seasoning and other processed items.
  • Paldo King Ttukkeong 왕뚜껑 — A Paldo cup with an ingredient list split into noodles, a vegetable-flake soup and a powder soup. It sits in the middle for sodium and is tagged hearty and salty.
  • Nongshim Neoguri Cup 너구리컵 — The Neoguri cup lists fish cake first, then seafood items and a powder soup. Its sodium is almost the same as Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Bowl.
  • Nongshim Shin Ramyun Black Bowl 신라면블랙사발 — A spicy beef-flavored ramen in a black bowl, tagged spicy and salty. Its ingredients include dried chili and a processed item that contains meat, with wheat as the listed allergen.
  • Nongshim Neoguri Big Bowl Noodle 너구리큰사발면 — The Neoguri flavor in a bigger bowl, with lower sodium per 100 g than the standard Neoguri cup. It lists both wheat and fish as allergens.
  • Nongshim Shin Ramyun Big Bowl Noodle 신라면큰사발면 — The Shin Ramyun flavor in a big bowl, with far less sodium per 100 g than the Shin Ramyun Cup. Its ingredients include dried carrot, dried shiitake and dried green onion.
  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor Big Cup 진라면 매운맛 큰컵 — The spicy Jin Ramen in a bigger cup, with lower sodium per 100 g than the standard spicy cup. It keeps the spicy and salty taste tags and lists chili powder.
  • Nongshim Chapagetti Big Bowl Noodle 짜파게티큰사발면 — The first of the sauce-style noodles, described as black bean sauce noodles. Its sodium is well below the soup-style cups, and its taste tags are salty and nutty. Its listed ingredients include soy protein, and wheat and soy are the listed allergens.
  • Paldo Jjajang King Ttukkeong 짜장 왕뚜껑 — The black bean version of King Ttukkeong has much less sodium per 100 g than the original. It has the most fat on the list at 20 g per 100 g, and its only taste tag is hearty.
  • Samyang Big Cup Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 불닭볶음면 — The lowest sodium on the list per 100 g. It is described as a Korean hot chicken flavor stir-fried ramen, and its ingredient list is only noodles, sauce and seasoning.

Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor

The main differences

Start with the numbers per 100 g. Mild: 417 kcal, 1567 mg sodium, 3.33 g sugar, 10 g protein, 12.5 g fat, 65.83 g carbs. Spicy: 417 kcal, 1550 mg sodium, 3.83 g sugar, 9.17 g protein, 12.5 g fat, 66.67 g carbs. The two are close. Mild is a little saltier and has a little more protein. Spicy has a little more sugar and carbs.

Slightly Spicy stands apart. It has 425 kcal, 1467 mg sodium, 3.33 g sugar, 10 g protein, 15 g fat and 62.5 g carbs per 100 g. That is the lowest sodium and carbs of the three, and the highest fat.

On the ingredient list, mild and spicy each give oil-fried noodles, a compound seasoning and a processed fruit and vegetable product. Slightly Spicy gives a longer list. It names the seasoning twice, four processed fruit and vegetable items, and a processed seafood item.

Who might prefer which

If you want a plain, filling bowl, the mild version carries the taste tags for that. Keep in mind it has the highest sodium per 100 g of the three.

If you want a spicy flavor, the spicy version has the spicy tag and a sodium figure just below the mild. Slightly Spicy is the pick if you want a spicy tag with the lowest sodium per 100 g. It also has the most fat and calories per 100 g, so it is the heaviest of the three on those two counts.

What to check on the label

These figures are for the Korean-market versions, and packs sold outside Korea can differ. Read the numbers and ingredient list on the pack in your hands.

Also check the weight of the pack, since the figures above are per 100 g and not for a whole bag. Compare like with like when you set one version beside another.

The lineup

  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Mild Flavor 진라면 순한맛 — The mild version, tagged as plain and filling. It has the highest sodium per 100 g of the three, at 1567 mg.
  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Slightly Spicy Flavor 진라면 약간매운맛 — The slightly spicy version, with the longest ingredient list. It has the lowest sodium of the three, but the most calories and fat per 100 g.
  • Ottogi Jin Ramen Spicy Flavor 진라면 매운맛 — The spicy version, with the same three listed ingredients as the mild. It has the most sugar and carbs per 100 g, and the least protein.
