Buldak Bokkeummyeon is the spicy stir-fried noodle with a cartoon chicken on the pack, and it is often the first Korean ramyun visitors ask for by name. Buldak means "fire chicken" and bokkeummyeon means stir-fried noodles. You cook the noodles, pour off most of the water, and toss them in a thick red sauce instead of eating them as a soup.
Travelers meet it because the shelf is full of it. The same chicken mascot appears on packs and cups in many colors, each a different flavor or size. They can look alike at a glance. This guide helps you match the Korean on the label to the flavor you want and know what each pack lists inside.
How to eat it like a local
Most Buldak versions are made without soup. Boil or soak the noodles, drain almost all the water, then stir in the sauce and any seasoning packet until every strand is coated. Many Koreans add a slice of cheese, a fried or boiled egg, or a side of rice, cold milk or kimchi to soften the heat.
The Stir-fried Soup Noodle versions, with 볶음탕면 on the label, work differently. They are a spicy noodle with broth, so you keep the water. If you want something closer to classic ramyun, look for 탕 in the Korean name.
Telling the versions apart on the shelf
Look first at the Korean name. 불닭볶음면 alone is the original. A word in front of it names the flavor: 치즈 for cheese, 4가지치즈 for four cheese, 까르보 for carbonara, 로제 for rosé, 야키소바 for yakisoba and 푸팟퐁커리 for Thai-style crab curry. The cheese, carbo and rosé versions are tagged as rich and savory alongside the heat, while the yakisoba and curry versions lean salty.
Next, check the size. 큰컵 means Big Cup, a larger cup you fill with hot water and finish with the sauce. Packs without 큰컵 are the bag or standard versions. The same flavor often comes in both, so the size word is what tells them apart.
What the label lists
Every product in this list names the same three parts on the label: fried noodles (유탕면), a liquid sauce (소스) and a seasoning blend (복합조미식품). The order changes from pack to pack, but the format stays the same. Read the full ingredient panel on the pack itself for the detail behind each part, and see the table below for nutrition.
The lineup
- Samyang 4 Cheese Buldak Bokkeummyeon 4가지치즈 불닭볶음면 — The four-cheese flavor in the standard size, tagged as spicy, savory and addictive. A good pick if you want the cheese version without the larger cup.
- Samyang Big Cup 4 Cheese Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 4가지치즈불닭볶음면 — The four-cheese flavor in a larger cup. Look for 큰컵 4가지치즈 on the label.
- Samyang Big Cup Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 불닭볶음면 — The original fire-chicken flavor in a larger cup, with no added flavor word in the Korean name besides 큰컵.
- Samyang Big Cup Buldak Stir-fried Soup Noodle 큰컵 불닭볶음탕면 — The soup version in a larger cup, so you keep the broth instead of draining it. It is tagged as spicy and salty.
- Samyang Big Cup Cheese Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 치즈불닭볶음면 — The single-cheese flavor in a larger cup, tagged as spicy and savory. The label reads 치즈 rather than 4가지치즈.
- Samyang Big Cup Pu Pad Pong Curry Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 푸팟퐁커리 불닭볶음면 — A Thai-inspired crab curry take on Buldak in a larger cup, tagged as spicy and salty. Look for 푸팟퐁커리 on the cup.
- Samyang Big Cup Rosé Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 로제불닭볶음면 — The creamy rosé flavor in a larger cup, tagged as spicy and savory. The label reads 큰컵 로제.
- Samyang Big Cup Yakisoba Buldak Bokkeummyeon 큰컵 야키소바불닭볶음면 — A yakisoba-style sauce on the fire-chicken noodles, in a larger cup. It is tagged as spicy and salty rather than creamy.
- Samyang Buldak Bokkeummyeon 불닭볶음면 — The original that the rest of the line builds on, with just 불닭볶음면 on the label. Start here if you want the plain fire-chicken flavor.
- Samyang Buldak Stir-fried Soup Noodle 불닭볶음탕면 — The soup-style version in the standard size, with broth you keep rather than pour off. Look for 볶음탕면 in the name.
- Samyang Carbo Buldak Bokkeummyeon 까르보 불닭볶음면 — A carbonara-style flavor that pairs the heat with a creamy sauce. The label reads 까르보.
- Samyang Rosé Buldak Bokkeummyeon 로제불닭볶음면 — The rosé flavor in the standard size, mixing the fire-chicken heat with a creamy tomato-style sauce. Look for 로제 without 큰컵.
Nutrition and label flags, per 100 g
Every figure in the table comes from the product's own nutrition label as filed with Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), per 100 g so packs of different sizes compare directly. An ingredient flag means that ingredient is written on the label. An empty flag means nothing of that kind is listed. It is not a certification and does not rule out shared production lines.
